De Amerikaanse activiste werd geboren in de slavernij, oorspronkelijk met de naam ‘Isabella Baumfree’. Ze was eigendom van kolonel Johannes Hardenbergh en werd na 1806 een aantal keer verkocht.

Hoewel ze oorspronkelijk enkel Nederlands sprak, kreeg ze bij haar hardhandige eigenaar John Neely ook de Engelse taal onder de knie. Voor misverstanden vanwege de taalbarrière werd Sojourner gestraft en het was ook rond deze tijd dat ze zich tot religie begon te wenden. Ze geloofde dat ze haar naam, Truth, van God had gekregen omdat ze de waarheid aan mensen zou verkondigen.

Na haar ontsnapping uit de slavernij, werd Sojourner Truth niet alleen bekend door haar strijd voor de afschaffing van de slavernij, maar ook voor die van vrouwenrechten. Ze kwam in contact met de vrouwenbeweging door haar aanwezigheid bij betogingen en op congressen.
